Ameren Corporation is a St. Louis-based Fortune 500 energy company
serving 2.3 million electric and 900,000 natural gas customers in a
territory encompassing 64,000 square miles in Illinois and Missouri.
Ameren was formed in 1998 through a merger of Central Illinois Public
Service Company and Union Electric Company. In Illinois, Ameren's
primary operations are: AmerenCILCO, AmerenCIPS and AmerenIP; and
two nonregulated electric generating companies, AmerenEnergy Generating
and Ameren Energy Resources Generating.
AmerenCILCO provides electric and natural gas services in a
4,500-square-mile territory running across 19 central and east-central
Illinois counties. AmerenCILCO, which is based in Peoria, has about
205,000 electric and approximately 210,000 natural gas customers.
Major cities served include Peoria, East Peoria, Pekin, Springfield
and Lincoln.
AmerenCIPS provides electric and natural gas services in a territory
covering 20,000 square miles encompassing 66 central and southern Illinois
counties. Based in Springfield, AmerenCIPS has about 388,000 retail
electric customers in 557 communities and approximately 188,000 natural
gas customers in 267 communities. Among the major cities served by AmerenCIPS
are Quincy, Alton, Carbondale, Effingham, East St. Louis, Mattoon and Macomb.
AmerenIP provides electric and natural gas service across 15,000 square
miles in northern, central and southern Illinois. Based in Decatur,
AmerenIP has about 600,000 electric customers and 415,000 natural gas
customers. Major cities served by AmerenIP include Decatur, Champaign,
Bloomington, Galesburg, Belleville and Danville.
AmerenEnergy Generating is a nonregulated generating company that assumed
ownership of the AmerenCIPS generating plants on May 1, 2000. Major
generating plants include Coffeen Power Station, Newton Power Plant,
Hutsonsville Power Station, Meredosia Power Station and Grand Tower Power
Station. AEG also owns and operates five combustion turbine generating plants.
AmerenEnergy Resources Generating is a nonregulated generating company
that assumed ownership of substantially all of AmerenCILCO's generating
plants on October 3, 2003. Major generating plants include Duck Creek
Power Station and E.D. Edwards Power Station.
Another nonregulated generating facility is the AmerenEnergy Medina
Valley Cogen, LLC, which produces electricity, steam and chilled water
for Caterpillar, Inc.'s engine manufacturing facility.
In addition, Ameren owns 80 percent of Electric Energy, Inc., which
includes the Joppa Power Station and Midwest Electric Power.
